The inefficiency of school administration
This is going to be a rant against my school’s registration process. As a double-degree student, I belong to two institutions, and as such, need to be registered at both. At the University of Tokyo, it’s easy: I filled a lot of paper during my first week, but since then it’s been smooth. At my French school, it’s difficult. Because I need to pay tuition fees every year, as well as renew my student ID card, and pay social security. And fill a form, again and again. As a double-degree student, I’m extending my study period by one year. It means that I shouldn’t be a student at the French school anymore, so I need to ask permission to be registered for a final year. I need to ask them if I’m allowed to pay the tuition fees. I’ve been asking since the end of August, with my friends who are in the same situation. Since then, we sent e-mails every week or every two weeks, with no response from the registration office (although our departments confirmed the extension of scholarship, they could only redirect us to the registration office, which, every start of year, has to handle more than a thousand students’ registrations with only three members.) This morning, I sent an e-mail again. With my friends, we finally received a response, that looked like an automated one, telling us that we were late and that we did not respect the registration rules and deadlines, which stipulate that we must be registered no later than two weeks after the start of the semester, which in France is around September 1st. The irony is that their e-mail doesn’t even seem to take our repeated e-mails into account. They did not answer our questions about payment methods. Nothing. They just said that we were in an irregular situation. Geez. I know they don’t have the need for another employee during the rest of the year, but couldn’t you just hire some temporary worker during this rush period, or even better, make an automatic, Internet-based registration system?? Or at least acknowledge that you were overwhelmed, instead of just ignoring our messages, which stated very clearly that we understood their situation? It totally pissed us off.
